Cat and Genny (Cable Avoidance)

The Cat & Genny course is designed for anyone involved in the ground works excavation. The aim of the course is to increase candidates knowledge and understanding of the use of cable and pipe locators, identifying underground apparatus and how to avoid danger.

The aim of the course is to:

  • Provide the candidate with a knowledge and understanding of the safety procedures and precautions before and during excavation work

The Objectives of the course are to enable delegates to:

  • Select typical site plans
  • Identify underground apparatus
  • Use pipe and cable locators

  • All personnel engaged in the ground works excavation

Course summary:

Candidates will participate in theory and practical exercises covering:

  • Interpretation of utility maps
  • Symbols used by utility companies on maps
  • Transferring information
  • Review of HSG 47 – Avoiding Danger from Underground Services
  • Common types of underground apparatus
  • Support of apparatus in open excavations
  • Use of cable and pipe locators (CAT & GENNY, RD-400, 4000, 7000, 8000)
